Fijian warrior's fan. This is large and fanlike, made from a leaf of the fan palm, sakiki (Pritchardia pacifica). Leaves around the circumference of the fan are tied in place with sinnet fibre wrapped around flexible cane spreaders. Originally restricted to chiefly use, these shades were often used in dances (meke) in concert with weapons. Early records suggest they were used in battle, though for what purpose is unknown.
